Maitland Bitter & Twisted Beer Festival Nov 3rd & 4th

We're getting excited! Our favourite festival is almost here; Maitlands Bitter & Twisted Beer Festival. This takes place in the grounds of an old high security prison and there will also be lots of tunes; it makes for a fabulous place to wander around with tasting glass in hand.

We're going with a food theme: Chocolate, Coffee, Ginger, Sour Cherry & the B&T twisted ale competition winners creation - Chocolate & Ginger.

Hope to seeing you there,

Keith

The festivals are coming!

We are getting excited about Newcastle Craft Beer Week from Sun 18th Nov through to Sun 25th Nov. It will be an action packed week AND YOU CAN BOOK TICKETS TO MANY EVENTS RIGHT NOW. We are hosting a couple of events ourselves; including a brew day & beer dinner in our brewery; sharing our beer at a few other events & will be joining in the festivities at many of them! It will be a very fun week.

Before then the Bitter & Twisted Boutique Beer Festival happens on the 3/4 November. A beer festival with tunes that takes place at the Old Maitland high security prison. A fantastic venue. We are brewing up some very drinkable beers for the occasion with a bit of a food theme happening: chocolate, coffee & cherry.

Oh yeah. We are also collaborating with local wine maker, Scott McWilliams, to brew up something special for Sydney Craft Beer Week (cant let them forget the Hunter is here!)

It's all very exciting!

Spring is here - well almost...

Well Spring is almost here and it will be an exciting time for us at the Hunter Beer Co.

  • In September Jess is releasing three (3) big Belgian style beers; a classic Golden Ale, a Pale with a hoppy kiwi twist & her take on Forbidden Fruit.

  • October and out thoughts turn to Oktoberfest. We will have a month of German Beer styles, some beer 'n' food events to match & plenty of Ooompah music!

Bring it on 'cause we can't wait!

Coffee & Chocolate

This weekend we're joing in the fun at the chocolate festival at Hunter Valley Gardens and we have brewed two beers for the occasion.

Our always popular Chocolate Porter; but, this time we have added a few kilos of cocoa to the mix - why? Because we could!

And we will also be releasing Pure Bliss - a coffee flavoured stout. We have used cold saoked coffee beans supplied by Bliss Coffee Roasters and brewed ourselves a tidy, flavoursome very approachable little stout. Lots of fun!

(make sure you ask the Brewers about the beans - absolutely amazing!!!)

If you miss the beers at the Festival then come to our place where we will have the beer on tap in the Brewery Bar.

American Hop Trilogy

The weathers turned a bit cold, but that has nothing to do with this post!

We're introducing theme months to our beers on tap in the Brewery and April's theme is American hops.

We will have our American style Pale Ale, one of our favourite seasonals, Cranky Pants, a big hoppy American style India Pale Ale and introducing for the first time - No Pants - a very big American Style Imperial India Pale Ale.

American hops often have fruity flavours; orange and grapefruit are the classics, but you can have passionfruit, rockmelon, lemon & the list goes on & on & on and when you combine two or more hops their character becomes something new and sometimes very different to any of the individual hops used. It makes for a whole load of fun to brew and even more fun to taste. Each of the beers mentioned above have fruit character, but that's not the whole story. The beers also have a great whack of malt to balance the bitterness bought on by using an excessive amount of hops and this malt improves the flavour profile. And, we haven't got around to talking about alcohol; which also changes the taste and mouthfeel. The Pale, Cranky Pants & No Pants come in at 5.2%, 7.5% & 9% abv respectively and the flavour of alcohol adds another dimension to the beer; tasting the beers next to each other provides a fantastic learning experience.

India Pale Ales came about when the British had an army in India and the troops wanted to drink beer. A fellow called John Hodgson brewed a very hoppy beer (which also makes it a very bitter beer) and a beer with a bit more booze in it. This recipe allowed the beer to hold up during the many months long sea voyage from Enlgand to India and in fact the beer improved during the voyage; mellowing some of the harsher characters. Our version is called American syle because we use hops that come Washington State in the USA. 'Imperial' or 'double' simply means that the beer is a stronger version than is typical; our Imperial IPA has more bitterness and uses more hops than is typical for the style.

And if the hops aren't for you, don't worry our otehr regulars are all on tap alongside our popular Chocolate Porter and Oyster Stout (yes it does have Oysters in it!).

Happy tasting, from the brewery team.
